Here in Kettlewell, we’re reminded time and again how fortunate we are to have the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) watching over the Dales. Their courage and commitment were once again on display during one of their most demanding missions in recent years — a 36-hour rescue of three experienced cavers trapped underground in Dowber Gill Passage, just above the village.
When Storm Amy brought unexpected, torrential rain, rising floodwaters cut off the men deep underground. The alarm was raised late on Thursday 4th October, and more than 100 volunteers joined the “long and difficult” operation. Working through the night in dangerous, water-filled passages, teams built a temporary dam to divert floodwater and maintained vital underground communications via “Cave Link”. The cavers were safely brought to the surface by 2:30am on Saturday, exhausted but unharmed.
UWFRA’s volunteers — over 60 skilled cavers, climbers, and mountaineers — are on call 365 days a year, ready to respond at any hour and in any weather. The team receives no government funding, relying entirely on donations to maintain essential equipment and training.
At Wharfe Camp, we salute UWFRA for their courage and dedication in keeping the Dales safe. To support their lifesaving work, please visit www.uwfra.org.uk.
